See Every Unmissable Outfit Hitting the MTV VMAs Red Carpet!

The MTV VMAs are kicking off tonight, where the red carpet looks are often more about delivering shock value than serious fashion moments. Case in point: Lady Gaga‘s infamous meat dress at the 2010 show, or Katy Perry’s strapless denim Versace gown at last year’s event.

Miley Cyrus is hosting this year’s show, and nominee Taylor Swift is shutting down the red carpet alongside her squad of “Bad Blood” film clip costars in a sequin, houndstooth crop top and matching pants.

But we know you’re really after the pictures, so keep clicking to check out the most buzzworthy looks from the 2015 MTV VMAs—and keep checking back tonight as we update you with more celebrity arrivals.

A Complete Guide to Taylor Swift’s (Very Famous) 1989 Tour Squad

This year, Taylor Swift has been on a quest to acquire as many celeb BFFs as possible, and as loathe as we are to admit it, the girl is actually doing the damn thing. Not only is she the most popular girl in the free world, but Swift is also kind enough to document all her burgeoning and truly genuine friendships with a seemingly endless stream of Instagram pics.

First, Swift infiltrated the ranks of model It-girls (no doubt with the help of bestie Karlie Kloss), but then she set her sights on other friend demographics—running the gamut from the US Women’s soccer team, fresh off their Women’s World Cup win, to rapper Fetty Wap. Cara DelevingneKobe Bryant! Ellen DeGeneres! Russell Wilson and Ciara! Lisa Kudrow singing “Smelly Cat”! Taylor Swift can’t stop, won’t stop until she has celeb bestie world domination.

Swift recently played her last show in LA, and will be moving on to more continents—and probably (definitely) more celeb friends—as her “1989” tour continues. But before that happens, let’s reflect on the roster so far and admire the ambition and breadth of the Taylor Swift Friend Industrial Complex. After all, it’s not every girl that can collect so many best friends and document it so fastidiously on the ‘gram.

Finally: Instagram Photos Don’t Have to be Square Anymore

instagram landscape update

Photo: Jasmine Garnsworthy

We can all agree that—even with its stringent photo requirements—Instagram is pretty awesome, but it just got a lot more flexible: You’ll now be able to post pictures and videos in both portrait and landscape orientation.

This means that while you’ll still be able to share standard square snaps, there’ll be no more frustration trying to fit a horizontal photo into the constrained Instagram template.

instagram photos aren't squarePhoto: Instagram

In a statement released today, Instagram explained: “It turns out that nearly one in five photos or videos people post aren’t in the square format, and we know that it hasn’t been easy to share this type of content on Instagram: friends get cut out of group shots, the subject of your video feels cramped and you can’t capture the Golden Gate Bridge from end to end.”

Now, you simply tap the new format icon available on your account to adjust the orientation to portrait or landscape instead of square. Once you post, the full-sized version will appear in your friends’ feeds, however anyone who visits your profile will see the picture cropped back to square, which Instagram’s done in an effort to keep the pages looking streamlined.

You’ll have to download the latest app update to get the feature, so step to it and start posting.

Suede Block Heels: The Shoe You’ll See Everywhere This Fall

Over the years, I’ve amassed a fairly large collection of vintage and thrifted suede low-block heels. Mind you, I never really considered the shoe silhouette particularly high-style—they’re definitely dated, and a bit grandmotherly—but I like the slightly retro spin they give modern outfits like frayed jeans and high-waisted shorts, and they give me a just enough of a boost without looking like I’m wearing “high heels.”

My favorite pair—a beige ballet-flat style with a two-inch square heel (and an Ann Taylor label from the 1970s)—has become my daily go-to, so when I started seeing girls who clearly were dedicated to high-style shoes wearing an almost-exact pair, I knew my beloved granny shoe officially hit a tipping point.

When I started seeing both suede and leather versions on top runways like Comme des Garcons, Stella McCartney, and Céline though, I knew there was absolute proof that, well, they tipped.

I can’t say I’m surprised the prim shoe has become a thing—it’s already been proven that heels have climbed so far in the past decade that there’s nowhere to go but down—and the credit largely goes to New York-based designer and retailer Maryam Nassir Zadeh, whose $379 Roberta pump is such a hit with the downtown crowd, that they can’t stay in stock. (The next batch will reportedly land in September.)

If you’re obsessed with MNZ’s suede heels and simply can’t wait until they hit shelves again, here are a few solid options to shop now.

Kanye West to Receive Video Vanguard Award at This Year’s VMAs

Now that Kanye West is finally getting the recognition from the fashion industry he always thought he deserved, it’s time for the music industry to follow suit – and MTV is ready, willing and able. The controversial and oft-polarizing rapper is set to be honored at this year’s Video Music Awards. Yeezy will receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award this year, which makes sense considering the rapper has rolled out more than a few iconic videos in his time.

We’re sure Kanye will come dressed to the nines to collect his honor. In the meantime, MTV has released a short video announcing West as the recipient of the award, which you can see above.

Six years ago, Kanye famously interrupted Taylor Swift as she collected her VMA for Best Female Video – this sounds like a great opportunity for Swiftie to exact sweet revenge.

WATCH: Sylvia Jeffreys Slams Publication In the Best Way for ‘Wardrobe Malfunction’

Let’s all take a moment to bow down to Queen Sylvia Jeffreys, who has bitten back at a publication for calling her visible choice of underwear a “wardrobe malfunction”.

Pointing the finger to Daily Mail Australia, the Today host took to Twitter to explain her outfit choice for The Australian Women’s Weekly and OCRF High Tea at Centennial Parklands Dining on August 25.

“Errr whoops! Anything to draw attention to a good cause, I guess. Right @helenmccabe?  #brafail #crazyeyes #10hours,” Sylvia tweeted.

Sephora + Pantone Team Up to Help Find Your Perfect Concealer and Lipstick

By now, every beauty obsessed babe knows—and loves—Sephora’s Color IQ foundation shade matching system. Launched in 2012, this free color matching service ensures that the days of wearing the wrong color BB are over forever.

And just when we thought no one was hearing our cries of “please make my shopping even easier!” Sephora + Pantone go and step their game up yet again by expanding the service to offer concealer and lip color matching. You heard us correctly: if you have five minutes, you can find the perfect under eye concealer or your ultimate Fall berry lipstick. Our days of messing with those germ-filled lipstick sample racks are over, thank goodness.

The process itself couldn’t be easier. You begin by getting your Pantone SkinTone number: a device that looks a little like a digital thermometer is held against your skin in three different places while it takes color-accurate photos. From this data, you’re given a SkinTone number that tells you how dark or light your skin is on a scale of 1 to 15, what kind of undertone your skin has and even how strong that undertone is. This number can be saved to your Sephora Beauty Insider account, so you never have to worry about forgetting it.

And then things get really exciting. If you’re looking for a concealer, you tell the system what you’ll be using it for: concealing under eye circles, or to use on your face to even out skin tone and hide blemishes. Then you decide whether you want coverage (so the product will match your skin exactly) or a brightening effect (so it will be half a shade lighter), and the Color IQ system tells you which of Sephora’s 400 concealers are the perfect product matches for you.

But perhaps the most revolutionary function is when it comes to lipsticks. Up until now, finding the perfect lip color has involved spending hours in the aisles, testing shades from wrist to shoulder, and still somehow managing to buy an unflattering color that we swear looked great in the store.

Say goodbye to all that.

With your SkinTone number in hand, you tell the Color IQ system whether you’re looking for a red, pink, nude, coral, berry or unconventional lip color (like blue, green or purple). You tell it what kind of finish you want (matte, satin, glitter, gloss, sheer), any brands you’re especially interested in, formulation (think longwear or liquid), any ingredients you want to avoid (parabens, fragrance) and even whether you want it to have built-in SPF. And then, out of Sephora’s 3500 lip colors, you’re given a list of products that not only compliment your skin tone perfectly, but that meet all of your additional criteria. From there, you can either hit the aisles and try the colors on to your heart’s content, or have your customized shopping list emailed to you.

And the best thing, other than that the service is 100% free? It really works. We were lucky enough to test this out, and got a list of our Pantone-approved perfect red lip colors that included some all-time favorites, as well as new shades that we were stoked to test out. As predicted, they all looked amazing for our skin tone—and the entire process, from color matching to trying the products on, took under five minutes.

We officially feel like The Jetsons.

The concealer and lip matching services will be available at all Sephora retail stores in September 2015—but you can go and get your complimentary SkinTone number (and perfect foundation and powder matches!) right now. And we’re serious: run, don’t walk, and take advantage of this. Perfect skin and your new favorite lipstick are literally five minutes away.
