We can all agree that—even with its stringent photo requirements—Instagram is pretty awesome, but it just got a lot more flexible: You’ll now be able to post pictures and videos in both portrait and landscape orientation.
This means that while you’ll still be able to share standard square snaps, there’ll be no more frustration trying to fit a horizontal photo into the constrained Instagram template.

In a statement released today, Instagram explained: “It turns out that nearly one in five photos or videos people post aren’t in the square format, and we know that it hasn’t been easy to share this type of content on Instagram: friends get cut out of group shots, the subject of your video feels cramped and you can’t capture the Golden Gate Bridge from end to end.”
Now, you simply tap the new format icon available on your account to adjust the orientation to portrait or landscape instead of square. Once you post, the full-sized version will appear in your friends’ feeds, however anyone who visits your profile will see the picture cropped back to square, which Instagram’s done in an effort to keep the pages looking streamlined.
You’ll have to download the latest app update to get the feature, so step to it and start posting.
