‘Oil Slick’ is the Coolest New Way to Add Fun Color to Dark Hair

It’s been a couple of years since vivid, unnatural hair colors made their way from Hot Topic to the runway to the fashion-loving masses, but since then we’ve seen washed-out blues, vibrant pinks, even silvery grey and opal have their moment in the sun. But unless you were born with hair ranging from baby blonde to medium brown, they’ve been all but impossible to achieve without the help of bleach, leaving the darker-haired set feeling, well, left out.

MORE: How Real Girls Do Pastel Hair

Leave it to Aura Friedman, the Sally Hershberger Salon-based hair color guru beloved by celebrities, models off-duty, and regular girls alike, to provide the solution to every brunette’s pipe dream of getting in on the hair color trends that have heretofore required a commitment to long-term damage and the salon chair. The “oil slick” refers not to what happens when you go that extra day without washing, but rather the dark, dreamy rainbow color scheme that occurs when oil puddles gather on city streets.

“‘Oil slick’ is great for fall because of the rich tones,” Friedman told Teen Vogue. Better still, she says, the technique really does incur less damage on darker hair than the rounds of bleaching that would be required to achieve those ever-popular pastel shades. See? Hair color dreams do come true.
